The North Sacramento Sports Commission (NSSC) is committed to enriching the lives of our youth participants (ages 5-18) through sports and education. The primary objective of the NSSC is to establish and manage youth sports leagues in North Sacramento because we recognize there is not a credible and responsible body currently governing these activities in
our area. Our sports leagues provide structured, safe, and supervised environments where kids can learn the fundamentals of various sports. Additionally we prioritize teamwork, sportsmanship and that sports should not replace scholastic achievements in terms of priority. All of our leagues are inclusive and aim to encourage participation regardless of skill level, physical ability, or socio- economic status. Our Sports Leagues are a vehicle to help keep the youth in North Sacramento who participate in our leagues off the streets, and away from gang activities and influence.
In addition to our sports leagues, we conduct seminars for the Parents and Guardians of the youth who participate in Sports in our community. We offer resources and education on best parenting practices, particularly as they relate to youth sports participation. These seminars provide guidance on a range of topics such as encouraging healthy competition, recognizing the importance of mental health in sports, managing young athlete's expectations, the importance of healthy nutrition, and navigating the sports journey from elementary school ages through Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and High School participation (ages 5-18). We host workshops and informational sessions, provide literature and online resources, as well as offer individual family consultations.
The NSSC is excited to bring more accessibility and affordability to youth sports in North Sacramento. The Commission serves the sports-based youth development ecosystem in Sacramento in the role of an intermediary that provides technical and capacity-building services to organizations that directly serve our youth. The Commission also serves as a backbone organization that convenes a diversity of stakeholders to align a citywide effort to provide high-quality sports experiences for all of Sacramento’s young people.
Sports-based youth development (SBYD) uses sports to teach life skills and is delivered by trained coaches and mentors. Coaches are the key to the success of sports-based youth development programs. The relationships they build with youth, and the approach they take with their programs are what drives positive outcomes for youth.
