Coaches are the backbone of youth sports, serving as mentors and role models for generations of athletes. But unlike other educators, youth sports coaches often receive little professional development or have the necessary time to complete it beyond the mandated certifications in critical topics like CPR, concussions, and first aid.
Research has consistently shown that kids who play for trained coaches have a significantly better experience. The Commission is working to professionalize the youth-sport coach through an innovative education process that intentionally builds social-emotional learning techniques, tools, and practices into the curriculum.
Our Coaching Seminar sessions are aimed to provide the first citywide-recognized youth sports coaching certification and create Sacramento's new playbook for all levels of coaching. These interactive sessions will engage coaches at all levels who work with athletes (professionals, part-time, and volunteer staff) and provide them with the latest strategies and best practices that build connections and maximize the impact of sports programming.
Our Coaching Education program is on a mission to position Sacramento as the international leader of SBYD coach education by increasing the capacity of existing organizations and developing a certified corps of 500 trained coaches.
All coaches will receive a free 2-hour session, facilitated by the Center for Healing and Justice through Sport, that aims to increase the quality of youth sports programming citywide by 2024.
